Man arrested for stealing a vehicle at Lulu’s album launch in Lilongwe

Lilongwe Police Station has arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly stealing a motor vehicle at Lilongwe Golf Club during a music show and later crushing it into a ditch after a police follow-up on Sunday.

The suspect has been identified as Edward Chiweta, of Fukamapiri Village, Traditional Authority Fukamapiri in Nkhata-Bay.

At around 20:00 hours while police were patrolling along Mtunthama Drive, driver of a Mazda Demio, registration number BV 3196 was speeding and unnecessarily overtaking, and he caught the attention of the officers, leading to a hot pursuit.

When he hit Crossroads junction, opposite City Mall, where there is a road construction project, he lost control of the vehicle and fell into a ditch.

The officers pulled him out of the vehicle but they were surprised that the suspect started running away from the scene.

The police received the complaint of the stolen vehicle and when full details of the said vehicle were known, police asked Chiweta who admitted to have stolen the vehicle at Golf club in Lilongwe.

Edward Chiweta, who was treated as an outpatient at Bwaila District Hospital, has since been charged with the offence of Theft of Motor Vehicle, and will appear in court soon to face law.
