The “Malawi, The Warm Heart of Africa” logo will be appear on the shirts of Spanish second-tier football league outfit, Club Deportivo Leganés, starting with Sunday’s clash against Levante UD to be played at Estadio Municipal Burtaque from 2pm.
This follows the signing of an agreement between Malawi’s Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Wildlife’s and the football club as part of a “strategy to expand [Malawi’s] brand awareness”.
In a press statement issued today, the Ministry through Principal secretary, Chauncy Simwaka, explained that Leganes president Jeff Luhnow met President Lazarus Chakwera last September “to begin to strengthen ties and search for opportunities and talent in football”.
The statement reads in part: “The Ministry has reached an agreement with C.D Leganes, a Spanish football club, to join the club’s rotating “main sponsor” strategy, which allows companies from different sectors to have
the opportunity to associate themselves with the club and enjoy the notoriety that comes with being a “main sponsor”.
“In this way, the logo of “Malawi, The Warm Heart of Africa” will be displayed on the front of the first team kits during the next matches, as
well as in different media both physical and digital. With this agreement, Malawi seeks to continue with its strategy of expanding brand awareness. As a country we are proud to be associated with C.D Leganes.”
