Civil Society Agriculture Network (Cisanet) Tuesday said the country should take advantage of the competitive market opportunities including the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Cisanet National Director Pamela Kuwali said there was a need to unpack the potential impact of the AfCFTA on Malawi’ agro-food systems and ensure positive impact.

The coalition has since organised an agriculture policy conference to be held on February 17 2022 in Lilongwe.

“We want to link agriculture to trade and raise awareness among stakeholders who can make this agreement work. We also want to discuss concrete strategies because we all have a part to play to make this free trade area work for Malawi,” she said.

Chairperson of Access to Profitable Market and Multi-working Group at Cisanet Driana Lwanda said the country lacked structured markets for legumes thereby failing to compete on the international market.

“With absence of organised farmers, the country has not been able to utilise demand by the global market. Others from South Sudan recently came and made some demands but without organisation, Malawi will not be able to meet those demands,” she said.

Mwapata Institute Executive Director William Chadza said limited diversification on exports and infrastructure relating to energy and transport makes exportation expensive and limited.

AfCFTA aims to create a single market for goods and services in order to deepen economic integration of Africa.

The pact connects 1.3 billion people across 55 countries.
