Ma Blacks in two-weeks tour of SA

Local reggae group Black Missionaries Band and Anthony Makondetsa yesterday left for South Africa for a number of shows in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban.

In an interview yesterday, Black Missionaries Band leader Anjiru Fumulani said this is the band’s first tour of South Africa in four years.

“We have not been to the Rainbow Nation in four years partly due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We are now happy that finally our fans will get a taste of our new music,” he said.

Fumulani said during the tour, which starts today, they will perform in Johannesburg today, Orlando Stadium also in Johannesburg tomorrow and the next weekend they will perform in Pretoria and Durban before returning to Johannesburg on December 18.

“We are on tour for two things, one of which is to promote our new album Kuimba 12 which was released recently. Secondly, we want to reconnect with our fans in South Africa. We have a significant following,” he said.

Fumulani said they will be supported by mainly Malawian artists based in South Africa whose music resonates with their philosophy, but he could not be drawn to disclose their names.

In reaction to the news on social media, Malawians based in South Africa could not hide their excitement with the development.

Wrote Pilirani Chinangwa: “I cannot wait to dance to some good old reggae sounds by the Black Missionaries Band. I also hope they will play some Evison Matafale songs.”

Another fan identified as Marcus also wrote: “This is the best Chrismas gift that Black Missionaries Band has given us. We will come out in large numbers.” Black Missionaries Band will perform at Mayfar Orlando Pirates, Stompies Pub and Grill in Pretoria, Cool Runnings in Durban, Club Africa in Benoni and Dlamini Place in Germistone. They will return home on December 19.
