Lweya Bridge gives hope to Mzenga Community

Communities around Mzenga in Traditional Authority Kabunduli in Nkhata Bay District have expressed satisfaction with the K11 million foot-bridge being constructed over Lweya River.

Speaking in an interview, community member Elizabeth Milazi said the development will connect communities on the banks of the river..

She said the bridge will ease movement and reduce transport expenditure for people living in Chiswamphira, Msinawana, Pwengamu and Thula villages.

Milazi also said the bridge will also make it easy for people to access services at Mzenga Health Centre and Mzenga Market.

She said: “We are grateful to our elders for coming up with a wooden canoe to ferry people across the river as we wait for the construction of the bridge.”

Commenting on the progress of the project, Nkhata Bay District Council director of planning and development Isaac Mkandawire said he is contented.

He, however, asked the contractor to speed-up the works to mitigate the challenges the communities are experiencing.

“I have advised the contractor to stick by our agreement so that we should have a long-lasting infrastructure that can stand adverse weather conditions,” Mkandawire said.

The 36-metre long Mzenga-Lweya foot bridge is being built by Tithe Construction Company with funding from the District Development Fund.
