Lions Club supports Chikwawa District sanitation drive

Mandala Lions Club of Blantyre has donated 10 trash bins to Chikwawa District Council to promote hygiene in markets and surrounding areas.

Speaking in an interview on Monday after handing over the bins, the club’s president Tina Das said clean environment is one of the pillars they focus on.

“We have the responsibility to promote hygiene in public places, including markets. We believe the trash bins will contribute towards that mission,” she said.

Das said the garbage bins, which they sourced from Toyota Malawi, will be distributed in five selected markets in the district.

She also said the donation was part of commemoration of the National Clean-up Campaign initiated by President Lazarus Chakwera in November 2020.

Chikwawa District Council markets supervisor Reuben Chonzi said the items will help in garbage collection.
Senior Chief Mlilima commended Mandala Lions Club for the donation, saying the bins will help vendors and consumers in markets to observe hygiene.

Last week, Chileka Lions Club also donated garbage bins to Mulanje District Council, but together with Mandala Lions Club, they plan to jointly donate to Zomba, Machinga, Mangochi, Salima and Kasungu districts.

Government designated the second Friday of every month as a National Clean-Up Day, an initiative that seeks to contribute towards cleanliness. n
