The Budget and Finance Committee of Parliament has expressed satisfaction with how the Lilongwe District Council is implementing projects.

The committee’s chairperson Gladys Ganda said this when they visited the council to appreciate the implementation progress of the Performance Based Grants and District Development Fund projects in the just-ended 2021/22 financial year.

She commended the council’s secretariat for the good coordination and involvement with other stakeholders at all levels in the implementation process.

Ganda: We are impressed

Ganda said: “We play an oversight, legislative and representative role and we are here at Lilongwe District council to play an oversight role as well as learn on how the council is doing differently from others to be able to achieve impressive results and be one of the best performing councils in the country.”

In his remarks, Lilongwe district commissioner Lawford Palani attributed the council’s success to a good working relationship that exists between the secretariat, elected members and traditional leaders.

National Local Government Finance Committee acting executive director Kondwani Santhe said such visits are important as they provide a platform for sharing experiences and best practices for the betterment of the country’s local councils.

In the recently released local authorities performance assessment results, Lilongwe came second with a score of 75 percent while Mulanje lead with at 76 percent.
