Lilongwe District Council hails nutrition project

Lilongwe District Council has commended Mother to Mother, a non-governmental organisation, for implementing nutrition interventions in the district.

Speaking on Tuesday when the organisation met the District Nutrition Coordinating Committee, the council’s nutrition officer Ulemu Chiyenda said they were impressed with the interventions.

Chiyenda: We are impressed

“The organisation has conducted awareness on nutrition and promoted a breastfeeding culture among mothers,” she said.

Mother to Mother senior programmes manager Tendai Mayani said the project has reached out to many pregnant and breastfeeding women.

“We are optimistic that we will reach the target at the end of the project. We are also sending malnourished children to nutrition rehabilitation centres,” she said.

In random interviews in Mitundu and Traditional Authority Kabudula, community members demonstrated knowledge of the importance of eating six food groups to improve their nutrition status.

Gertrude Mwalule, a community member from Mitundu, said through the project, she learned the importance of breastfeeding children.

“As a mother, I now know that breast milk is nutritious compared with supplementary milk,” she said.

The one-year USAid-funded project is targeting 2 250 people from Kabudula, Mitundu and Area 18 health centres in Lilongwe.

According to a 2016 Malawi Demographic and Health Survey report, stunting is at 37 percent in the country.
