After two days of deliberation, it was time for members of the Malawi Law Society (MLS) to loosen up with some merriment courtesy of music vibes from the Black Missionaries.
The setting was the Sunbird Nkopola Lodge in Mangochi on Saturday night where MLS held its annual general meeting. The Chileka-based reggae outfit made members of the bar temporarily forget their gowns and wigs to showcase their dance moves.
Anjiru leads the patrons in a captivating dance
Led by Anjiru Fumulani, Ma Blacks did not disappoint as they dished out their popular hits, including Watsetesereka, Mlomo, Yang’ana Nkhope and Olenga Dzuwa.
Moda Fumulani curtain-raised the performance followed by Mbumba ya Abraham hit-maker Anthony Makondetsa who gave way to Anjiru for a thrilling two-hour performance.
In between, lawyer-cum-artiste Davis Njobvu of the Edgar ndi Davis acoustic duo did not want to remain a mere patron but also jumped on stage to play one of their admired love compositions Wazerezeka much to the delight of the packed auditorium.
However, as the free-of-charge show came to an end just after midnight, the indefatigable audience screamed for more.
This was the second time the society engaged a live performance to spice up its AGM and conference. Last year, Another Blantyre-based outfit Mibawa Band entertained the lawyers at a similar event.
In an interview, Anjiru applauded MLS for engaging them to entertain the members of the bar.
He said: “We are excited because there are good live bands which could have been equally considered. The musical contact with the patron told us that MLS did not make a wrong choice to engage Ma Blacks.”
Salima Sugar Company Limited executive chairperson Wester Kosamu said the band is a crowd puller and its songs have inspiring messages.
“The AGM is a big annual event for the legal profession. We have had two days of heated debates on legal issues so we needed some time and vibe to make us forget the strenuous work we underwent and it was only fair for MLS to invite Ma Blacks for our leisure,” he said.
Seasoned lawyer and music promoter Jai Banda said the lawyers were delighted with the overall performance and were looking forward to a continued working relationship.
