Lawyer Asks MHRC To Intervene On His Arrest Over Buying Stolen Car

A legal Practitioner Stanley Chirwa has penned the Commissioners of the Malawi Human Rights Commission requesting for an intervention following his arrest.

Counsel Chirwa was arrested on 26th April, 2024 on alleged charges of possession of property suspected to have been stolen from South Africa.

According to the address that we have seen, he was supposed to be brought before a court of law of competent jurisdiction to be told of the reasons for his detention on Monday 29th April, 2024 but until today, he is yet to be taken before court.

“I duly provided the required information about the said vehicle which included a copy of a police clearance issued by the Malawi Police Service and a copy of Motor vehicle Registration Certificate which crearly indicates that the said vehicle does not belong to me,” Chirwa revealed.

He believes that his arrest is a deliberate plot to frustrate his efforts in contributing to the delivery of justice in matters where some public figures and Civil Society Organisations who are perceived to be opponents of the current regime are interested parties.

His letter has been copied to the United States Ambassador to Malawi, the British High Commissioner to Malawi and All Civil Society Organisations in Malawi.
