Karonga District Council hails nutrition interventions

Karonga District Council Nutrition Coordination Committee is impressed with nutrition interventions Nkhata Bay District Council is implementing.

Karonga district food and nutrition officer Keston Sinkhonde expressed the sentiments on Monday after visiting Machaka Farmer Field School in Nkhata Bay District.

The farmer field school is a community-based agriculture research station promoting technologically advanced knowledge and production techniques.

Sinkhonde commended the coordination between care groups and farmer field schools.

“I am impressed with integrated homestead farming, bio-fortified food production and the flow of data from the district council to the grass roots in implementing the interventions,” he said.

Nkhata Bay principal nutrition, HIV and Aids officer Joshua Nyirenda commended Karonga District Council for visiting Nkhata Bay to share best practices on how to promote nutrition in the two districts.

“Nkhata Bay has enhanced coordination among nutrition stakeholders to fight malnutrition in the district,” he said.

Machaka Farmer Field School chairperson Martha Gondwe urged other community members, mostly the youth, to embrace the farmer field school concept in their areas.

“Using the knowledge I acquired from the farmer field school, I grow crops using manure only. This year, with the rising cost of fertiliser, I will use manure in my garden,” she said.

Gondwe said she also ventured into livestock farming and that she is able to support her family financially
