Information reaching this publication indicates that the People’s Transportation Party (Petra) has announced its withdrawal from the Tonse Alliance government in Malawi, citing growing corruption and governance failures as the main reasons for ending the political alliance.

The announcement was made by Petra leader Kamuzu Chibambo, who stated that the decision was made due to recent events surrounding Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) Director General Martha Chizuma, as well as the looming hunger caused by inadequate governance and the questionable procurement and supply of fertilizers under the Affordable Input Program (AIP).

Chibambo emphasized that the growing corruption and mismanagement within the government are not in line with the promises made during the 2020 Presidential Election.

He stated that these issues have frustrated all genuine efforts to fight corruption and uphold the rule of law.

In light of these concerns, Chibambo declared that Petra’s leadership had no choice but to withdraw from the Tonse Alliance with immediate effect.

“In light of this, Petra’s leadership is left with no option but to withdraw with immediate effect it’s membership from the Tonse Alliance, as it hereby does,” reads the statement.
