Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) newly reinstated Secretary General Grezelder Jeffrey has said former President Peter Mutharika is yet to inform her of his interest to contest for Presidency in the forthcoming 2025 Presidential polls.
Jeffrey Wa Jeffrey said this when reacting to a decision by some top officials in the opposition DPP led by the party’s regional governor for the South Charles Mchacha requesting Mutharika to stand again.
According to information at hand, the DPP top gurus wants Mutharika to again partner Atupele Muluzi of United Democratic Front (UDF) as it was in the fresh Presidential polls which saw President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera emerging victorious.
The DPP top officials feel that the decision will help in ending some leadership squabbles currently rocking the party.
But DPP SG Jeffrey in an interview said if Mutharika is indeed interested to stand again, he should find time to inform her as the party’s secretary general.
“As it stands, he has not told me. No any other member has told me, so I cannot competently comment on this issue for now,” she said.
Meanwhile, a governance expert Makhumbo Munthali says the country’s Constitution does not bar Mutharika from contesting as a presidential candidate.
