Employees of various insurance companies on Monday planted 650 trees in disaster-prone Chibavi West Ward of Mzuzu City.

Speaking after a tree planting exercise in Salisbury Lines, the group’s chairperson Limbani Zimba Kathewera said it is everyone’s  responsibility to take part in fighting climate change by planting trees.

“Members saw the need to help citizens of Mzuzu by planting trees in flood prone-areas. We have started with Chibanja Ward and we will extend the exercise to other areas,” he said.

Chibavi West Ward councillor Gabriel Mwaungulu called on others to emulate what the insurance service staff did.

“We are thankful to the group for the timely support. However, we still have space that needs to be covered with trees. We are, therefore, calling upon others to emulate this good gesture,” he said.

The tree planting exercise has come at a time when there are concerns that Mzuzu is losing its green city status due to wanton cutting of trees in the city.

Mzuzu City Council (MCC) director of parks, leisure and wildlife Yotamu Mtafya said: “The depletion of trees in Chikangwa has piled pressure on the city’s trees as timber millers who were relying on Chikangwa Forest are now harvesting trees in the city”.

The council plans to plant 22 000 trees in the city.
