Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture has embarked on a project to pilot civic education hubs at traditional authority (T/A) level to enhance coordination development from the grassroots.

In an interview on Saturday after launching Mwirang’ombe Civic Education Hub Committee in Karonga District, Department of Civic Education principal audio-visual officer Joseph Msiska said the committees will help to influence mindset change in communities.

He said: “If we are to achieve the Malawi 2063 development plan, there is need to involve local development structures because they are key in planning development in their areas.

“These hubs will facilitate mindset change among people in line with developmental needs at area level. They will also impart knowledge and skills to community members for them to participate in national development.”

Msiska urged the committees to engage communities to enable people to actively embrace mindset change.

Mwirangombe civic education hub chairperson Gift Mwafulirwa said his committee will take the mindset change agenda to the community.

“We feel honoured with this approach that development should start from the grass root level,” he said.

Karonga District Council acting director of administration Martin Mkandawire welcomed the launch.

“Mindset change is an enabler of the Malawi 2063,” he said.

The Department of Civic Education is piloting the local civic education hubs in Nsanje, Zomba, Machinga, Phalombe, Nkhotakota, Kasungu, Nkhata Bay and Karonga districts.
