IF I WERE :Peter Mutharika

IF I WERE :Peter Mutharika

Former President of the Republic of Malawi and leader of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), I would be cautious in my criticism of my successor Lazarus Chakwera and his Tonse Alliance administration because under my tutelage, the situation was not any better.

Yes, if I were the octogenarian who retired to the Page House in Mangochi, I would be honest with myself by acknowledging that although the Chakwera administration has failed big time and appears clueless and hopeless with no hope in sight, but painting a picture that my administration was better off is an insult to Malawians.

If I were the Mutharika Malawians overwhelmingly voted out in June 2020 Fresh Presidential Election,  I  would also recall that during my tenure, Chakwera called for my resignation when it appeared that I was not in control of State affairs. Therefore, expecting him to heed to a similar jazz from me is a far-fetched dream.

Oh yes, if I were Adadi, I would further appreciate that much as my successor is struggling, calling for fresh elections would be recipe for disaster for the country as there is no legal backing for the desired vote and the nation is battling a severe economic squeeze.

Still, if I were leader of the main opposition party, I would keep piling pressure on Chakwera to live up to his word and deliver a better Malawi for all as promised in his flowery oratory.

But I am not Adadi of the Ndimunyenyanyenya fame.
