Emmanuel International has handed over 124 push bikes to care group promoters from five traditional authorities (T/As) in Mangochi District to ease their mobility as they disseminate health and nutrition messages in hard-to-reach areas.

The volunteers are from T/As Chowe, Namabvi, Chiunda, Mtonda and Chilipa where the organisation is implementing a nutrition intervention under Titukulane Project funded by USaid.

Speaking on Monday during the handover of the bicycles, Emmanuel International country director Charles Mukiwa said the bicycles will help enhance nutrition activities in the district.

“Our organisation is committed to fighting malnutrition, as such, the bicycles will help to accelerate the activities, thereby improving the nutrition status of the district,” he said.

Mukiwa urged the volunteers to work hard to ensure people embrace good eating habits, including six food groups.

Mangochi district principal nutrition, HIV and Aids officer Charles Lomoni said the bicycles came at the right time when the district’s nutrition status was not good.

“We expect the intervention to help reduce the district’s stunting rate from 45.1 percent against the national prevalence rate of 37.1 percent,” he said.

Lomoni has since urged the beneficiaries to take care of the bicycles.
