Head teacher nabbed for allegedly stealing K11m

Police in Nkhata Bay have arrested a primary school head teacher and school committee chairperson for allegedly misappropriating K11 million meant for construction of a head teacher’s house.

In an interview yesterday, Nkhata Bay Police Station spokesperson Kondwani James said the money is part of a government initiative through the Ministry of Education for the construction of head teachers’ houses.

He said the school is one of the selected institutions where government through School Improvement Plan Strategy allocated K17 million in October 2021 for the school’s project in the district.

“The head teacher was chairing the process of handling the money from the bank to where the project was being implemented. Reports indicate that the project monitoring team was satisfied with its progress until it stalled,” said James.

He said when the head teacher was queried, he allegedly failed to explain reasons until he was forced to go to the bank on September 15 2022 to check transactions.

“It was then realised that besides the notable K5 million withdrawn in March 2022 when the project had just started, the head teacher in conjunction with the school committee chairperson, made further withdrawals,” said James.

Meanwhile, the suspects have been remanded at Nkhata Bay Prison after appearing in court on Monday where they denied the charge.
