Haiya says K7m pledge to be fulfilled before season kicks off

Newly-elected Super League of Malawi (Sulom) president Fleetwood Haiya says clubs will get the K7 million subvention each he promised in his manifesto before the start of the 2023 season.

The Nyasa Big Bullets board vice-president was responding to a question on when the clubs should expect to receive the subventions which amount to K112 million.

Haiya: We are serious

Said Haiya in an interview on Monday: “Whatever we promised, we will deliver.Clubs will get their money this forthcoming season.

“We are serious about developing football by empowering clubs.”

Meanwhile, some clubs have aligned their budgets tothe promised subvention.

Chitipa United said the money will help them as they don’t have a sponsor.

In an interview yesterday, the club’s general secretary (GS) Duma Ngoma said: “We have a budget of K68 million for the whole season, but currently we only have about K18 million.

“So, we are excited with the K7 million that the president promised. It will make a huge difference.

“We will use the money to buy sports equipment and also pay for accommodation and transportation during our away games. We just hope it will be released in time.”

Karonga United GS Ramzey Simwaka said: “We are a community team and operate based on handouts from community members. We have so many challenges such as players’ salaries, transport and we also have to pay Sulom K3 million affiliation fee.

“So, this money will help us meet these needs. Mr Haiya has set good standards, looking at the presentation of his manifesto. We were there and we believe he has the integrity to leave by his word.”

Malawi Defence Force side Kamuzu Barracks GS Christopher Njeula said they will use the money to buy uniforms and also pay affiliation fee.

He said: “As a club, when preparing for a new season, there are a lot of expenses. The K7 million will be used to procure sports equipment like boots, uniforms and also pay affiliation fee.

“We look forward to working with the new president, he appears eager to develop football by empowering clubs financially.”
