Govt to support families of Chitipa road accident

Chitipa District Council has described Sunday’s Chiweta river accident that claimed the lives of four people and left several others injured as unfortunate.

District Council’s Director of Administration, Isaac Nkhambule said this today at Chitipa district hospital mortuary during a send – off ceremony to the four.

Nkhambule said the council will buy coffins for the four departed souls and provide transport to ease expenses for the bereaved families as the deaths were sudden and unexpected.

Maston Mtambo, a representative of the bereaved families thanked the district council for coming to their aid and the timely response of medics to help save lives.

During the accident, which took place early hours of yesterday, Sunday, three people, Oscar Mtambo, Eunice Msongole and Queen Nyambo were pronounced dead upon arrival at Chitipa district hospital while another person Alice Kaonga died in Karonga enroute to Mzuzu Central Hospital where she was referred for specialized medical treatment.

The accident involved a Fuso Fighter lorry and a two tonne Mitsubishi canter. The victims were going for a funeral service at Muchinga village in the district and met their fate at Chiweta area, as the Fuso Fighter driver failed to control the vehicle thereby hitting the canter and both vehicles fell into Chiweta river.
