Govt to recover ‘stolen’ K750 million AIP money by July – AG Chakaka Nyirenda

Thabo-Chakaka-Nyirenda: It may take four weeks

A court in Germany has issued a final confiscation order for the repatriation of K750 Million (516 000 Euros), that the Malawi Government paid to a United Kingdom firm in a botched fertilizer procurement deal.

Attorney General Thabo Chakaka-Nyirenda has confirmed the development in an interview with MIJ Online. He claims that his office is just finalizing some processes for the repatriation of the money.

“It may take four weeks and the indication is that in July the funds will be transferred in the bank account of Smallholder Farmers Fertilizer Revolving Fund,” confirmed Nyirenda

Government paid the money in order to procure fertilizer under the 2022-23 Affordable Inputs Program (AIP) but the company never delivered the goods.

The development forced President Lazarus Chakwera to fire minister of Agriculture Lobin Lowe and replaced him with Sam Kawale.

Last year, the AG Chakaka Nyirenda promised Malawians to resign if he will not recover the money.
