Govt Eyes To Recover K50 Billion From Amnesty

Attorney General, Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda said the aim of the amnesty is to recover government funds that were swindled dating back as far as 2004.

Nyirenda made the remarks during a media briefing in Lilongwe on the 60-day amnesty that he has given to those that might have defrauded the government.

He said the arrangement would enable those with evidence to come forward so that the evidence could be used to convict many and recover more money as government eyes to recover K50 billion.

The beneficiaries of the amnesty will be people who will show “genuine remorse” and bring forward evidence that can be used in convictions.

Nyirenda, however, cleared rumors that the arrangement will be used to shield anyone, even cabinet ministers.
