This follows a revelation last week that government awarded two contracts to foreign companies to import sugar into Malawi, which was mate with protests from local producers arguing the move will impact local sales, hence calling for government to reverse the decision.
Meanwhile ministry of Trade on Monday held a meeting with stakeholders in the sugar industry on the matter.
Lekani Katandula-Managing Director for local sugar producer-Illovo has told MIJ Online that stakeholders had given their submissions and are waiting for government’s determination on the matter.
Meanwhile Mayeso Msokera-spokesperson for the Ministry of Trade-has told us that the ministry recommended that sugar producers should discuss with sugar users for a negotiated affordable price of the commodity for a win-win situation.
However, Msokera also disclosed that government already issued a license to one company for the importation of 20,000 tons of sugar and the license is still valid.-MIJ ONLINE
