Giants drop more points

TNM Super League giants Silver Strikers and Mighty Wanderers dropped more points yesterday after settling for draws in their respective third matches of the 2022 season.

The draws mean both Wanderers and Silver have collected four points from possible nine each.

What promised to be a thriller in the capital city derby ended in a 1-1 after Civil Sporting Club (Civo) came from behind to cancel Silver’s lead at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.

Striker Chawanangwa Kawonga had put the Bankers in the lead six minutes into the match, but Patrick Phiri levelled in the 22nd minute.

Civo coach Franco Ndawa told the media in a post-match interview that he was satisfied with the point.

He said: “We conceded an early goal but I told the boys to calm down and play their game and we got the equaliser. I am happy.”

But Silver coach Dan Kabwe was not impressed with the result, saying a draw was like a loss to them.

He said: “To them it is a win. To us it’s a loss.”

The Zambian tactician was also not amused with his charges after missing several scoring opportunities.

He said: “Look at how [midfielder] Patrick Macheso missed that chance. A professional player is not supposed to miss that one.”

It was also the same story at Mpira Stadium in Chiwembe, Blantyre where Wanderers and Mighty Wakawaka Tigers settled for a goalless draw.

Both sides fired blanks as none emerged mightier than the other.

Wanderers coach Eddington Ng’onamo also blamed his charges for wasting scoring opportunities.

He said: “We had over 15 chances from which we could have scored but we failed to utilise them.”

Newcomers Sable Farming shared spoils with Ekwendeni Hammers at Mulanje Park where the two sides drew 1-1.

Mzimba-based Hammers took the lead through Wongani Lungu in the 42nd minute, but Sable equalised five minuites later through Emmanuel Lino.

However, the biggest upset in week three was from Balaka Stadium where rookies Dedza Dynamos stunned Kamuzu Barracks 2-1.

The rookies had to come from behind to cancel Horace Nchoma’s goal through striker Henry Misinjo in the 36th minute before his partner Charles Chipala scored the winner in 40th.

Dedza coach Dan Dzinkambani said though he has a squad of young players they still collected full points.

He said: “It was a tough game. But the players showed their dedication. We conceded early through a penalty, but we fought hard and scored the two goals and managed to win the match. I am proud of the boys.”
