South Africa-based Malawian forward Frank Gabadinho Mhango on Sunday ended a three-month goal drought when he scored the winner for Moroka Swallows in a 1-0 victory over Cape Town Spurs in the DStv Premiership.
Prior to Sunday’s encounter, the Flames striker last scored for his team on December 15 last year against SuperSport United also in a league match which the Dube Birds lost 2-1.
Mhango: It brought some relief
His latest goal has taken his tally to three in the league and four overall, having scored in a 2-1 Carling Knockout Cup victory against Bay United.
Against Cape Town Spurs, the 31-year-old struck with barely a minute left in regulation time to break the Urban Warriors’ hearts.
The former AmaZulu FC, Orlando Pirates, Bidvest Wits, Lomontiville Golden Arrows and Bloemfontein Celtic forward broke the deadlock with the last attempt.
It was a crucial goal for Swallows in their fight against relegation.
Swallows are now 13th in the 16-team league with 24 points from 21 matches, 22 points behind leaders and defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, who have played three games less.
In an interview yesterday, Mhango described the win as a big boost in their fight to avoid the chop.
He said: “It feels good to score after some time, it brought some relief, but over and above that, it gives us hope of remaining in the top-flight league.
“There are still nine games to play and we have a chance to go up further. We just need to remain focused.”
His compatriot Khuda Muyaba, the only other Malawian playing in the South African flagship league, is yet to score since joining Richards Bay three months ago. The team is second from the bottom with 14 points from 21 matches.
On the other hand, Royal AM, who are coached by Malawian John Maduka, are 11th with 25 points from 20 matches.
