A four-year-old girl died in Nsanje District on Thursday night after the house she was sleeping in caught fire.

The house in which Blandina died

Nsanje Police public relations officer Agnes Zalakoma confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Blandina Banda.

She said the accident happened at John Village at the Boma.

“It is reported that on the fateful night the family was inside the house sleeping.

And at about 10pm the house caught fire suspected to have started soon after electricity returned,” Zalakoma said.

She said some family members managed to escape but the deceased failed and efforts by well-wishers to put out the fire failed.

“The matter was reported to Nsanje Police Station and police detectives visited the scene. The girl was found lying unconscious in a toilet where she tried to hide,” said Zalakoma.

She was rushed to Nsanje District Hospital where death was confirmed.
