Four people are in custody at Lilongwe Police Station on suspicion that they had a hand in the murder of a 32-year-old man Gilbert Mumba, at Kanjawala Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) M’bwatalika in Lilongwe on January 11, 2022.
Inspector Hastings Chigalu, Lilongwe Police Public Relations Officer said the four have been identified as Malesi Nyamulani, 22, who was wife to Mumba (now deceased), sister to first suspect Linda Nyamulani, 44, two brothers Weruzani Nyamulani, 30, and Daniel Nyamulani, 25, all from Kanjawala Village, T/A M’bwatalika in Lilongwe.
Chigalu said that Gilbert Mumba (deceased) was a husband to Malesi Nyamulani, first suspect, but got separated some two years ago.
Mumba then went on his way and married another woman in Dowa District.
It is alleged that on January 9, this year, Mumba got the news that the first wife has also found a new life partner.
This development did not go down well with him and he planned to visit Kanjawala Village on January 11, 2022 to verify for himself.
“It is further said that when Mumba arrived at the first suspect’s place at 20:00, he found this other husband to Malesi in the house, eventually a fierce fight erupted.
“Sensing danger, Malesi shouted for help, immediately attracting family members. The mob started assaulting Mumba, leaving him with life threatening injuries.
“Unfortunately, Mumba was pronounced dead upon arrival at Kamuzu Central Hospital,” Chigalu said.
Postmortem revealed that death was due to severe haemorrhage, secondary to assault.
Mumba came from Chiuza Village, T/A Malili in Lilongwe District.
The four will appear in court after investigations to face a murder charge which contravenes section 209 of the Penal Code.
