Calm has returned to Nyamithuthu China Railway camp site in Nsanje where 25 fired employees were baying for the blood of one of the company’s officials.
The fired employees were protesting a decision by the construction firm to fire them without giving them their dues.
One of the fired workers Finias Chimombo told us that they blocked entrance into the campus and denied the company officials exit as one way of forcing the management to meet their demands.
Chimombo bemoaned failure by labour authorities in Nsanje to address workers concerns on gross abuse of labor rights, saying some employees have been subjected to physical abuse by their bosses.
CR20 officials bowed down to pressure and engaged in talks with the fired employees.
The employers have since paid the workers their outstanding dues. When asked about the company’s position on the matter, a top CR20 official only identified as Berthia refused to comment. Government awarded a contract to construction firm CR20 to rehabilitate a rail section between Marka boarder and Bangula in Nsanje district.
