-He will with landslide- football analyst
Contrary to the background noise trumpeted by a pressure group in the name of Concerned Football Enthusiasts which is led by former member of Football Association of Malawi, George Mussa, that the current Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Walter Nyamilandu Manda must not contest at the Elective Conference in December this year for what he says it is time for “new blood” to take over the leadership, but FAM Laws are backing the incumbent to contest even for other two more terms.
Article 40 of FAM Handbook of 2019 says this on tenure:
Tenure of Office
Members of the Executive Committee shall he elected by the General Assembly for a period of four (4) years
The term of office of members of the Executive Committee shall BEGIN after the end of the General Assembly which elected them. They may be re- elected.
No person may serve as President for more than three terms of office, whether consecutive of cumulative, provided that previous terms served as a Vice President or a member of the Executive Committee shall be considered in determining the term limits of the President
However, term limits were enacted in 2019.
“Term limits were enacted in 2019. This means Walter is entitled to three terms from 2019. In essence, he can stand for two more terms because laws are not applied retrogressively,” said one legal analyst who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The legal analyst also said that those whom are saying that Walter Nyamilandu must not contest based on morality are wrong because FAM operates within legal dictates.
Under Nyamilandu, Scorchers grabbed the COSAFA football women trophy, two times the Flames qualified for AFCON Championship, football academies pitched across the country, Super League of Malawi Secretariat still depending on FAM on resources for them to operate, beach soccer is being played across the country, securing a lot of sponsorships including the recent Goshen Trust that has pumped in K60,000 into women football among others.
One football analyst who did not wanted to be named said, Nyamilandu is a brand and with whatever he won while at the helm of FAM will give him more chances of winning election than those who are sponsoring some of these football sellouts to speak on their behalf.
