Football Association of Malawi( FAM) has donated football equipment to Northern Region Moto Division One League side Nyungwe FC.
The donation is in response to a call for material support the Karonga-based side made after 25 of its members died in a road accident at Tenenthe early this month on their way from a league match against Chitipa Hammers.
As the team returns to action after the mourning period, they appealed for football equipment and, on Friday, FAM donated 10 footballs, cones, training bibs and match day uniform set.
FAM president Walter Nyamilandu handed over the equipment through Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) at Luwinga Technical Centre in Mzuzu.
Nyamilandu: The club
needs help
Nyamilandu said the club needs support.
“The calamity that happened to Nyungwe was a big disaster. The club needs help and support and we have been speaking to NRFA on how we can support. So here we are with this equipment to ensure the club does not die,” he said.
Receiving the equipment, NRFA chairperson Lameck Khonje said FAM demonstrated to be a true friend of football.
“We believe that this equipment will revive the club and give them hope that they will continue participating in the league.
“And we also believe that the community around Nyungwe will be encouraged to support the team because the mother body has come in to support. This is a timely intervention,” he said.
NRFA gave Nyungwe FC a three-week break to mourn and are now ready to return to action.
