FAM dangles K1m bonus

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has offered the Flames K1 million each for a win should they qualify for group stages at the ongoing  Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals in Cameroon.

The Flames have also been offered $1 500 (about K1.2 million) each for the group stages and an extra $100 (about K82 500) per day per player throughout the knockout stages.

Flames have been offered special incentives

The development follows a series of meetings which FAM had with the captain Limbikani Mzava and vice-captain John ‘CJ’ Banda in Cameroon.

According to a press release issued by the association yesterday, this a special incentive to motivate the team to progress at continental showpiece.

Reads the press release in part: “Following successful discussions, the players will be entitled to K1 million for each game won or drawn subject to qualifying to the knockout stages, failing which a normal game bonus of K500 000 for a win and half amount for a draw will apply.

“Fifty percent of the qualification bonus funds from CAF [Confederation of African Football] will go towards the players with FAM retaining the balance for operational costs of the team.

“However, it is worth noting that the exact amount of the bonus and when it will be paid to FAM is yet to be confirmed by CAF.”

FAM also states that proceeds of the quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals to be shared 50:50 between the team and FAM in the event that the team makes it that far.

The association says despite not having adequate resources, it has prioritised the wellbeing of its players to enhance the team’s performance so that it can excel at the tournament.

“It is our expectation that this initiative will bear the desired outcome of progressing to the group stages for the first time ever.”

Mzava confirmed the offer in an interview yesterday, saying it is a big motivation.

He said: “It is a fair offer in that FAM is challenging us to do well in order to get more.

“As I said earlier, players are determined to give their best.”
