Ex-prison warder arrested for assaulting a primary school leaner in Salima

Police in Salima have arrested a former prison warder identified as Edwin Pereya aged 43, for the offence of grievous harm.

According to Salima Police Station Public Relations Officer Inspector Jacob Khembo, it is reported that the suspect has a maize field at Gilbert Village in Traditional Authority Kalonga and he guards the garden to prevent thieves from stealing.

Khembo said while at his maize field, Pereya saw three young people stealing his green maize and started chasing them.

“In the course of chasing the trio, he caught one of them aged 12 who is also a Standard 3 learner at Ntchentche Primary School,” Khembo said.

Instead of reporting the issue to police or taking the young suspect to his parents, Pereya punished the juvenile to the extent of wounding him on the right leg and arm using a sharp object.

Unfortunately, it is reported that the juvenile’s arm has been amputated due to the injuries sustained.

Pereya will appear before the court soon to answer the charge of grievous harm contrary to Section 238 of the Penal Code.
