The Lilongwe Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court has adjourned to July 21 2022 the case in which former Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera) chief executive officer Collins Magalasi is accused of abusing public resources.

Magalasi, who is answering charges of fraud and abuse of office, allegedly sourced K10.5 million from Mera to fund Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) officials’ accommodation in 2018 on the pretext that the funds were for Mera sensitisation campaigns.

The case was set for hearing yesterday before senior resident magistrate Florence Msekandiana and the State was expected to parade witnesses.

However, it transpired that there was communication breakdown which forced the State to stop witnesses from travelling from Blantyre to Lilongwe.

Senior assistant chief State advocate Dzikondianthu Malunda told the court that both the State and defence assumed the matter would be heard in the morning, a time that coincided with another case which Magalasi’s lawyer, Andy Kaonga, was handling in the High Court.

Msekandiana adjourned the matter to July 21 when the State is expected to parade two witnesses.
