Malawi’s Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola has said he has a list of names who were involved in siphoning fuel from Energy Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) in 2018.
Speaking in Parliament yesterday, Matola said he will name and shame all officials from the former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) involved in the matter.
His remarks were in response to Chikwawa North legislator, Owen Chomanika, who asked the minister why he has told Parliament that he has a list, yet he could not release it.
According to Matola, people who were syphoning fuel, up to 400 litres per day and in the process at least 3 million litres of fuel were siphoned from ESCOM and EGENCO.
The minister also said there were some suppliers who supplied items that are just being kept in warehouses because they are not fit to be used.
The Minister added that his ministry is committed to dealing with cartels at ESCOM and EGENCO.
He has therefore announced that he will read out the names in Parliament on Monday if allowed to.
In 2018, news broke out that some individuals were conniving with guards and transporters to siphon fuel at ESCOM.
