Election of new Bishop for Anglican Diocese of Upper Shire fails

An elective conference of the Anglican Diocese of Upper Shire (ADUS) in Zomba on Thursday, December 14 failed to elect a new Bishop of the diocese as some delegates decided not to cast their votes after their candidate Bishop Mchombo declined his nomination for the role.

The development meant four contestants for the seat failed to meet the required two-thirds majority of the 22 delegates to the Indaba at St. George Church in the district.

Results show that Reverend Canon Mchakama had six votes, Reverend Canon Kalilombe got four, with both Reverend Dr Eston Pembamoyo and Vicar General of the Diocese Reverend Canon Grant Tebulo getting one vote each.

The decision to choose a new Bishop of ADUS now lies in the hands of the Episcopal Synod of the Church on a date that is yet to be announced.

The position fell vacant following the excommunication of Bishop Brighton Vita Malasa for allegedly not observing the constitution and canons of the Anglican Church.
