Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) disaster risk reduction deputy director FedsonChikuse has bemoaned vandalism of early flood warning systems in flood-prone areas in the country.

He said this on Friday in Rumphi during a meeting with the district’s civil protection committee.

Chikuse said while Rumphi and Karonga have done well to protect the gadgets, they have been vandalised in Salima and Dedza.

“According to what we have gathered so far, there was adequate sensitisation about the importance of the gadgets in districts they are still intact. On the other hand, there was no sensitisation on the same in the districts the gadgets were vandalised,” he said.

Chikuse said they engaged Malawi Red Cross Society to conduct awareness on the importance of the gadgets.

A police officer from Rumphi Police Station Lester Chatanga said collaboration between community policing structures and people also played a role in securing the gadgets.

Rumphi district civil protection committee also presented their plans on how to protect the gadgets.

The early flood warning systems project is expected to run up to 2023 with funding from UNDP and Green Climate Fund to the tune of $16 million (about K16 billion).
