Department of Disaster Management says stakeholders should think beyond their imagination to discover disaster measures in order to avoid the duplication of efforts each year.
The remarks were made by Charles Kalemba, Commissioner for Disaster Management at Chikho Hotel in Dowa district during 2021/2022 Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) Humanitarian Response Programme Review meeting which was aimed at reviewing the challenges caused by the just ended rainy season emergency response program.
Kalemba said that the food insecurity in the country is worrisome despite numerous running water bodies for the whole year but Malawi fails to be food secure.
“It is important to find solutions to disasters which arise due to man-made activities, for example in those districts which have poor drainage systems”, said Kalemba.
Commenting on the matter, Grace Chirwa, Salima District Commissioner said her council is taking all the necessary steps to utilize the year-long moisture that occurs in some parts of the districts.
“As you know one of the districts having poor drainage is my district Salima, and i want to assure you that my council is talking all the necessary measures to utilize the moisture that occurred in some parts of the district”, said Chirwa
The just ended rainy season had come with a lot of challenges which include tropical storms, disasters and the dry spell which has left many households on fire this year.
