Hospitality service providers Amaryllis Hotel unveils their stand-up comedy series this Sunday in Blantyre featuring comedian Daliso Chaponda.

Amaryllis Hotel manager Ramy Waheed said Malawi has potential to exploit stand-up comedy considering the cultural inclination towards it.

He said: “I have seen many Malawians present themselves in funny and sarcastic ways which I believe is part of their natural trait and a cultural thing. That is part of comedy. And watching such shows will certainly excite them.”

Coming to Malawi: Chaponda

During the launch, Chaponda will be joined by British comedian Imran Yusuf and Waheed said their choice of the Malawian was not hard to make.

He said Chaponda is an example to Malawian artists that anyone can make it on the international scene.

Waheed said: “Chaponda is an international Malawian brand. He is a Malawian who put himself on the limelight. Having him to come and perform in Malawi is like an honour. He has made it big on the international stage and having him perform here is a privilege.”

He said they want to make event event regular by holding it twice or once a month.

Waheed said they have a list of local comedians.

“As soon as we announced the start of stand-up comedy, both established and up-and-coming comedians came forward. They sent us their videos and profiles and we have that data in place. We have such a wide selection,” he said.

The manager said Malawi needs to copy and paste internationally accepted comedy standards to improve the art in the country.

Waheed said: “We need to implement everything here in terms of atmosphere, service, stage work, organisation and marketing need to be on point.”

In his announcement, Chaponda said he was excited to perform in Malawi with his colleagues Imran Yusuf and Salvado.
