Daliso Chaponda invades Malawi again

Four months after he held his last two shows on home soil, United Kingdom-based Malawian comedian Daliso Chaponda is set for a return.

Just like last time, the comedian will crack his jokes from the same Amaryllis Hotel platform in Blantyre, but albeit with a new supporting cast. He will star alongside South African Conrad Koch and Zimbabwean Carl Joshua Ncube during an event dubbed Wakanda For Laughter.

A home return for Chaponda

Chaponda will stage three performances in Malawi as part of the Wakanda For Laughter excursion with the others to take place on December 8 and 11, dubbed Chilima Jokes and the other taking place on December 18.

In an interview yesterday, Chaponda said he is looking forward to return to Malawi, a place which has always offered excitement to him.

“The last two shows I did in Malawi were great. So, I have been so much looking forward to it. Every time we look at the figures, it is increasing. The show in Lilongwe on December 11 will be filmed,” he said.

Part of the team: Koch

Chaponda said he wants to make his visits to Malawi more frequent because during the Covid-19 pandemic he did not make a single trip. He said he is targeting three shows per year in Malawi.

As part of his African tour, the award-winning comedian will in December also perform in Kenya, Zambia and Tanzania. In February, he will perform in Swaziland, Mozambique and Namibia.

He said: “I want to start having more African stops because I get invitations from more African countries.”

Chaponda said he has worked with Koch and Ncube around the world and he knows them very well. He added that the two artists are eager to come and perform.

To star in Malawi: Ncube

“I had a whole list of comedians to invite. But the selection was made easier because of the two,” he said.

The actor said the name of his tour is inspired by the Wakanda Forever movie.

“It is also about the idea on how Africa is seen by Europeans and Americans like it is just one country when it has so many countries and identities. So, I will do jokes all about this,” he said.

The Malawian raised his global profile when he made it on Britain Got Talent Show in 2017 finishing third. He currently runs his series called a Citizen of Nowhere on BBC Radio 4.

Koch, one of South Africa’s most sought-after comedians, is best known for his character as a puppet political analyst Mr Chester Missing. He has won numerous awards including being the first recipient of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation’s Anti-Racism Award.

The ventriloquist has interviewed most of South Africa’s political elite and held a number of regular radio and TV slots and even wrote an award-winning book.

Conrad’s live shows have received wide political acclaim and are a regular feature at arts and comedy festivals.

On his part, Ncube is a constant feature at some of South Africa’s leading comedy clubs such as Parkers Comedy and Jive , Goliath Comedy Club and the Capetown Comedy Club recently named as one of the top 10 of the best comedy clubs in the world.

He has been described by CNN African Voices as the new face of Zimbabwean comedy.

Amaryllis Hotel general manager Ramy Waheed said they are always ready to host the comedian.

“He is a global phenomenon. He brings a lot to the profile of our brand,”he said.
