Cyril Ramaphosa Ends National State Of Disaster After 750 Days

SA has declared the national state of disaster to be over after 750 days.

On Monday night, President Cyril Ramaphosa declared this, noting that all of the measures put in place during the national state of emergency had delivered positive results.

He mentioned several of them, including preparing medical facilities to combat the virus, vaccinating millions of people, distributing the R350 social award to thousands of unemployed people, and establishing a relief fund to help companies throughout the pandemic.

“We have now entered a new phase in Covid-19,” Ramaphosa said.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, SA has documented over 10 400 Covid-19-related deaths on the deadliest day. Only 12 deaths were registered on the deadliest day last week, indicating a dramatic decrease in the number of deaths.

“While the pandemic is not over, these conditions no longer require that we stay in a state of national disaster,” Ramaphosa said.
