CSOs To Demonstrate Against Chakwera’s Resistance To Trim Presidential Powers

Pressure is still mounting on President Lazarus Chakwera for resisting to trim presidential powers as he promised during the campaign period in 2020.

Civil Society Organization (CSO) under the banners Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiative (CDEDI), Center for Democracy Watch (CEDWAT), Social Revolution Movement (SRM) and other Human Rights bodies want Chakwera to move the system to amend Section 91 of the Constitution, which shields first citizens from criminal prosecution while in office.

The Civil rights groups, have told journalists at a press briefing in Lilongwe that Chakwera should move to remove the immunity as he promised during campaign period.

Different quarters are pushing Chakwera to take off immunity, fresh calls from the former President Peter Mutharika and Chakwera’s Vice Saulos Chilima who told journalists weeks ago that he and Chakwera agreed to scrap off immunity once getting into power.
