Civil Society Organization (CSO) under the banner National Anti-Corruption Coalition (NACC) and its partners have described the arrest of director general of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Martha Chizuma as deeply concerning.
In a statement signed by Moses Mkandawire, the group said they are “verifying details and circumstances around the arrest and will remain close observers of the next steps.”
The group further called on Chizuma’s safety and safeguarding of her rights as well as her family.
“We reiterate our call that that instead of frustrating those fighting corruption, government should focus on investigating and prosecuting those engaged in corruption,” Mkandawire said.
In the statement, President Lazarus Chakwera has been asked to remain committed to the pledge he made on July 27, 2022 during the launch of the Anti-Corruption Campaign in Blantyre to fight corruption.
Meanwhile, Chizuma has been released unconditionally.
