Senior Resident Magistrate Akya Mwanyongo, has refused to adjourn the case in which six people are accused of stealing about K440000 gate revenue at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

Prosecutor Francis Malenga had asked the court to adjourn the case because one of the six suspects, Laston Theu, co-director of Unity Gate Management System, a company that was hired to collect cash at the gates during a TNM Super League match between Mighty Wanderers and Sable Farming, has fallen ill and admitted at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (Qech) in Blantyre following a sudden illness on Thursday, May 12,2022.

Magistrate Akya Mwanyongo argued that the adjournment can only be effected if there was documented proof of Theu’s illness.

“We cannot appreciate the illness without documented proof as that might be seen as a mere attempt to delay the case,” he said.

Meanwhile, lawyer for the suspects, Ian Kumpita, has gone to Qech to get Theu’s health passport and the name of the clinician or doctor that attended to him. The case is expected to proceed later today.

The court granted bail to the suspects over two weeks ago but todayday Kumpita said that the bail could be revoked if the defense fails to bring the medical proof in court.

The accused include four gate cashiers, Chiyembekezo Buffalo, 22, Tingo Fungulani,22, Prince Ndalama, 19, and Gladys Meja, 23). The other two are Laston Theu,27, and Wyson Chingana,35, who are directors of Unity Gate Management System, the firm that was hired to collect cash at the gates during a TNM Super League match between Mighty Wanderers and Sable Farming.
