Court jails 2 people 3 years each for theft

Salima Magistrate’s Court has sentenced Chikumbutso Weruzani, 32, and Davie Mwale, 36, to three years imprisonment each for stealing a K5 million worth subversive water pump from Malawi Mangoes Company.

State prosecutor Weniford Mawindo told the court that the two were working as supervisors at the Salima District-based company.

He said the duo stole the water pump on October 22 2022 at Matumba Farm in the district.

“The matter was reported to Salima Police Station where investigations were conducted that led to the arrest of the two and recovery of the item,” said Mawindo.

In court, the duo pleaded guilty to the charge of theft by servant, but prayed for leniency, saying they are breadwinners for their respective families.

But in his submission, Mawindo asked for custodial sentence, saying the company’s assets need to be protected as companies contribute to the growth of the country’s economy.

He said the sentence will deter other would-be offenders.

In his ruling, first grade magistrate Anthony Banda agreed with the State and handed the two a custodial sentence.

Weruzani comes from Jolofani Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kalolo in Lilongwe while Mwale is from Mgawachifu Village, T/A Kalonga in Salima District
