Malawi National Council of Sports says it will soon hire a permanent executive secretary almost four years after the retirement of George Jana.
The council’s board chairperson Sunduzwayo Madise was responding to a question on why it has taken time to hire a permanent executive secretary for the parastatal.
He said: “We will soon advertise for the position.”
On his part, Comptroller of Statutory Corporations, Peter Simbani said the recruitment of the Executive Secretary is the responsibility of the Sports Council board as it is an executive management position.
He said: “Our role as Depertment of Statutory Corporations is to facilitate the recruitment process, ie, placement of an advert in the news papers, receiving the applications, preparing a matrix that captures all the necessary details of the applicants to simplify the shortlisting of candidates by the Board, and assisting the board during the interviews by way of providing secretarial services.
Yet to be replaced: Jana
“Since I came to this office as comptroller of statutory corporations in December last year, my office has not been approached by the Sports Council that it wants to recruit the executive secretary.”
Social commentator Humphrey Mvula said: “The absence of a chief executive officer, here in executive secretary, for four years is a serious and dangerous governance issue any sensitive and progressive board should not tolerate.
“You cannot run a company without a CEO or without a properly appointed acting CEO. The shareholder should exercise caution.”
Following Jana’s retirement in 2019, the council appointed its administration manager Henry Mereka as the acting executive secretary.
He reverted to his position last year when the council board appointed accountant Shephord Boma as the acting executive secretary.
Two years ago, when Oliver Nakoma was the board chairperson, three candidates were short-listed for the position, but nothing was heard after the interviews
