Council pumps K39m into KA guest house construction project

Karonga District Council with support from Governance to Enable Service Delivery (Gesd) project has pumped K39 million towards completion of a guesthouse construction expected to boost its revenue base.

Karonga District Council director of planning and development David Gondwe said the project began in 2018/19 financial year with funding from District Development Fund, but progress stalled due to erratic financing.

Speaking in an interview Monday, he said besides using the proceeds from the investment to improve service delivery, the generated revenue will also cater for council employees’ wages and salaries.

Gondwe said:  “This is one of the key council investments and we want to ensure that we market it fully so that we address financial shortfalls which we have been going through as a council.”

Karonga District Council chairperson Berlium Msukwa said the council will ensure that earnings from the investment are used for the intended purposes.

Gesd project is financed by the World Bank through the National Local Government Finance Committee.
