CHRR Fears Return of Bad Laws…Chakwera delights in passing laws that restrict people’s rights

Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) has expressed fears that the recent enactment of laws smells the return of dictatorship.

CHRR Executive Director Michael Kaiyatsa told the Nation on Wednesday “recent happenings such as the passing of bad Laws, the arrest and intimidation of independent journalists and vilification of government critics to the extent of having a Cabinet minister calling them achule, reflect poor governance, increasing dictatorial tendencies and a steady erosion of human rights.”

Kaiyatsa was also of the view that the Lazarus Chakwera-led government was taking delight in passing laws that restrict people’s rights.

“Last year, we saw the President assenting to the Labour Relations Amendment Bill, which restricts the freedom of workers to hold strikes.

“This year, we have seen the President assenting to the controversial amendment of the NGO Bill, which violets a number of fundamental rights, including right to freedom of association.

He said what was particularly disturbing was the way Chakwera has consistently ignored legitimate concerns.
