Cholera Is No Longer A Public Health Emergency In Malawi

Government through the Presidential task force on Coronavirus and Cholera has declared cholera situation in Malawi as no longer a public health emergency in the country.

Th declaration has come in line with the World Health Organization system for public health threats.

According to a press statement by the Ministry of Health signed by Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, Minister of Health who is also the Co-Chairperson for Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 and Cholera, Malawi has been battling with cholera outbreak since February 2022.

On 5 December 2022, President Lazarus Chakwera declared cholera outbreak as a public emergency and on 3rd August 2022 Malawi recorded 58 979 cholera cases with 1,768 reported deaths.

Meanwhile, government is encouraging the general public to continue implementing cholera prevention and control measures until the outbreak is over in all 29 health districts as the outbreak still stuck in 3 districts of Blantyre, Chikwawa and Mangochi.
