Chiponda speaks on govt’s decision to delay reopening of schools in BT, LL

Chairperson for the Presidential Taskforce (PTF) on Covid-19 and Cholera, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda confirmed to have received a lot of comments in line with government’s decision to reschedule reopening of schools in Blantyre and Lilongwe due to continued rising cases of cholera outbreak.

Chiponda who is also the minister of health said this today during government’s face the press initiative in the capital, Lilongwe.

According to Chiponda, they decided to delay opening of schools in Lilongwe and Blantyre as statistics show that in the past seven days, the two cities have recorded the highest number of Cholera cases.
For instance in Blantyre about 12 people have died.
Chiponda then apologized to Malawians for delaying with the decision saying they just need two weeks to put in place required resources so that it would help to protect learners.
She Further said, since February 28, 2022 when the country recorded a first case, government and other stakeholders have been joining hands to contain the outbreak.

The Minister then urged people to receive cholera vaccines and improve on their hygiene as cases continue being recorded in the country.

The press briefing was attended by government Spokesperson Gospel Kazako, Ministers for Education, National Unity and Labour as well as Dr. Wilfred Chalamira-Nkhoma.
