Chakwera urges authorities to support Tobacco farming to boost country’s economy

President Lazarus Chakwera has called on authorities to jealously support tobacco farming saying this is hub for the country’s social economic development.

This comes as the country has marked the beginning of the 2023 Tobacco Marketing Season at Kanengo Auction Floors in Lilongwe.

Meanwhile on the first day of the 2023 selling season, highest price on auction was 2.40 dollars with the lowest price being at 1.15 dollars.

Addressing the gathering Chakwera said the recent cyclone Freddy has highly contributed to economic challenges that the country is sailing through now.

Chakwera has however called on people to refrain from thinking that donations being channeled to Malawi will help the country to fully recover its economy.

According to Chakwera the country has huge debts which will require Malawi to find better ways to cushion the fragile economy.

Chakwera believes that tobacco farming if well supported will help the country to recover it’s economy as it generates the scarce Forex.
